Edgar Allan Poe

The Black Cat:

This story is about a man with a love for animals.  He soon gets a black cat with his wife and shortly starts to have major mood swings.  His anger is towards the cat and he eventually kills the cat but the short story takes an ironic swingI had wondered why he was so upset with the cat and this is what I thought of.

Everybody has a weakness which they wish to hide; a soft spot in their heart that holds a fondness.  In the short story The Black Cat, Edgar Allan Poe's main character is a man with a love for animals.  He had many pets as a child  and said "With these I spent most of my time, and never was so happy as when feeding and caressing them" but he also said how he had a cherished affection for dogs. No matter who hates us or leaves us, a dog will always be loyal.

Animals can be loyal and loving but many never have the affection for a human that can compare to that of a dog.  Poe's main character cherishes the love of all animals but specifically points out how loyal a dog is.  When the character has a loyal cat for his pet he soon starts to have mood swings.  Most of his anger is towards the cat for reasons he doesn't know himself.  It is his subconscious knowing that no matter how loyal his cat is, it could never replace the love of a dog.

A dog is loyal till the end if treated with love and care while a cat will look out for himself in the end.  Edgar Allan Poe's main character loves his cat dearly but realizes that no matter how much he loves this cat, the love will never be repaid.  His fear turns into anger and all hope is lost that he will regain sanity.  The love of a dog can never be beat but the love of any other animal is just as precious.
